Preserved food is the perfect option for disaster preparedness, families that need quick-prep meals, and people who love to go backpacking. Just about any food can be preserved. With a little water you can have your choice of meats, vegetables, fruits, and even entire meals.

There are two main food preservation processes: freeze drying and dehydrating. Outside of the fact that one process yields food that is more pricey, many people do not know the difference between the two. The next time you’re shopping for preserved food, consider the following.

Freeze Dried Food

This type of food storage is highly popular. It is often purchased by families who keep a constant supply of food storage. Some freeze dried foods can actually last up to 30 years without spoiling. These are the top three ways freeze dried foods differ from dehydrated food:

Taste — Freeze dried food storage is known to taste much better. It is created using a flash freeze process that leaves meals in suspended animation. When reconstituted, the meals have their same flavors, aromas, and textures.

Nutritional Content — The flash freeze process used to create freeze dried meals always helps the food keep its same nutritional content, unlike dehydrating which diminishes nutritional value. This is another reason why freeze dried food storage is so popular.

Cost — Because freeze dried food taste better, is more nutritious, and uses a more complicated preservation process, the food is more costly.

Dehydrated Food

This type of food storage is also popular because it is less expensive, and because it can actually be done at home with a dehydrator. This process uses heat (air drying, sun drying, etc.) to remove most of the food’s water content. These are the top three ways that dehydrated food differs from freeze dried food:

Cost — Dehydrating is a simple process that uses less expensive equipment, and if you dehydrate food at home it is even more affordable.

Space — Dehydrated food is more compact and lightweight than freeze dried food, which means that it is a better space saving option.

Taste — Dehydrated food storage is known to be a bit less flavorful than freeze dried food. Many times it also has a chewy texture. However, dehydrated foods like sun dried tomatoes are often used in regular, every day cooking because they yield rich flavors when cooked for long periods of time. But for emergency preparedness and quick-prep purposes, you will not get such a robust flavor.

Backpacks have become a popular means of packing your luggage during short and long travel. The greatest attraction is the ease with which these can be carried by the traveler. At the same time, backpacks offer more freedom of movement to the backpacker. Often a frame called the pack frame is used to keep the backpack steady, firm. It also distributes the weight evenly across the whole of the backpack. This will ease the pressure on the shoulder and distribute the weight to the hips or legs.

It has become common these days to see people packing things in a backpack. The traveler finds backpack convenient to pack and to carry with ease. Backpack has become very popular amongst travelers. Its ability to allow you to move around with ease is its biggest attraction. The backpack is often kept firm with the use of frames called pack frames. The backpack remains firm and steady on your back. The weight gets distributed uniformly across the backpack. This lightens the strain on your shoulder. The weight is also distributed to the legs and hips.

There are three kinds of backpacks available in the market. There are the ones with internal frame. Backpacks with external frames are also available. Backpacks without any frame at all are more common than these two types. To keep the backpack light, the frames are constructed from poles that are light weight. Aluminum is the most favored metal to make the poles though titanium and scandium alloys too are sometimes used. The frameless backpacks are of course the most common of them all.

The external frame backpack is best suited to carry heavy loads. It is meant for heavy loads. Campers usually pack or attach sleeping bags, camping tent and other camping equipments to the backpack. The rigid frame in the external frame backpack makes the backpack stiff. Consequently your free movement of the body is restricted. This is not the case with internal frame backpack. Its frame is flexible as it is made from plastic and metal. The flat bars or stays can be bedded according to the shape you desire. The backpack adjusts to your back and takes on a shape accordingly. This leaves your movement to be free and comfortable. But the more common backpack in use is the frameless backpack. These are also cheaper than the rest. When you need to carry really heavy loads for outdoor activities, there are the large internal frame backpacks that are specially designed. Heavy padding is provided and the backpack is designed to be fitted to your hips besides the shoulders.

The Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack is an award winning backpack. The Osprey Argon 85 review says that this is a backpack that is well organized with multiple pockets, an hydration system for providing water, a pressure easing waist belt and a comfortable back panel which are very well suited for those going for long travels.

There are varied designs. Colors, sizes and shapes for you to choose your backpack. The right one is what suits your needs and likes. They are also sold online.

FYI: For some useful shopping experiences, take a look at http://louisv-bags.com and see information and facts on (a) louis vuitton handbag.

What do you call the creative use of natural things to provide for your survival? Bushcraft survival. The phrase has been made popular by TV survivalist Ray Mears and Les Hiddins (The bush Tucker Man). It involves using natural cordage, bushcraft knives, building natural shelters, eating wild edible plants, starting fires without matches or cigarette lighters, and obtaining and purifying water in primitive situations. Although early American mountain men and the Indians were masters of these skills, they have been pretty much forgotten these days.

So, is there really a practical use for bushcraft survival today? In fact, people who love the outdoors like hikers and fishermen often express interest in the art. This makes sense as various situations could result from the pursuit of these hobbies which would render the enthusiast in trouble if he or she didn’t know how to survive with minimal gear.

However, in the new age of man made disaster scenarios, especially related to terrorism, these skills are not only useful for everyone, but they could mean the difference for an individual’s or even family’s ability to survive a catastrophic event.

So how do you learn these skills? Fortunately, there is plenty of information available via the internet, on videos and books. The problem is that many think they’ve got it because they’ve read about it. When it comes to bushcraft survival, there’s no substitute for knowing by experience how to practice the art. You can do it, it just requires practice.

One of the best ways to learn Bushcraft survival is by doing it together as a family. Children enjoy developing these skills plus, it helps them to become more confident in problem solving using only what is at hand – a skill that could really pay off later in life. That’s all for now. We’ll have more to say later about specific survival skills and equipment that could make all the difference. See you then.

Although once an essential skill, the ability to start a fire without matches or modern devices like cigarette lighters is all but lost. Nevertheless, anyone can learn how to do this and successfully start a fire in any weather.

Although once an essential skill, the ability to start a fire without matches or modern devices like cigarette lighters is all but lost. Nevertheless, anyone can learn how to do this and successfully start a fire in any weather.

Fuel, oxygen and heat are the essential elements for fire. In this article, we’ll especially consider your options for generating sufficient heat to ignite wood, since that is the most likely fuel you would be relying on in a survival situation.

The American Indians used friction to generate that heat – well actually to generate a small hot coal. They did this by rubbing wood or other dry woody kinds of materials together. The most common approach to doing this is with the use of a bow and drill or even just a drill, made out of wood. By spinning the wooden drill very quickly against another piece of wood, this tiny hot coal can be generated. It is exhilarating to learn to start a fire this way, but everyone who has will tell you this is the hardest way to start a fire. For that reason, they usually carry a better method with them. Perhaps this is the most important lesson to learn about fire starting.

What would a better method be? My first choice is a fire steel, also known as a ferro rod. A good quality rod will produce not just one spark, but a whole shower of them. What’s more, it will work even when it’s wet, which is a huge advantage for the survivalist. You can find just about every size and style of fire steel, you just need to pick the one that’s most comfortable for you to use.

In closing, a quick word about tinder. There are many natural materials, such as bark shavings, dead moss gathered from trees, and dry grass. If you’re serious enough about being skilled at fire starting that you’re willing to carry a fire steel, you might also consider keeping a tiny container with tinder in it – such as cotton mixed with Vaseline. In any case, even with a fire striker, practice is essential to become skilled enough to be able to start a fire under any conditions.

Griz Garzo writes on wilderness survival and primitive skills from his mountain home in the northwestern United States.

If you have ever stayed in a multi-person hostel dorm room, then you know how important good manners are. Having a bad hostel roommate can literally ruin part of your trip, causing you lack of sleep due to any number of environmental factors. Of course, sleeping in a room with seven or nine other people, it’s impossible to have a perfect night’s sleep, but hostel dorm rooms can be havens of generally bad behavior.

Read on to find out if you’re guilty of any of these hostel no-nos.

Crinkling plastic bags. Oh my word. If I had a dime for every time someone woke me up by crinkling a plastic bag in a dorm room, I would probably be rich. Using plastic grocery bags seems to be a favorite among backpackers – probably as a money-saving technique – but crinkling plastic bags at 3 am when you’re going to leave to catch your early morning train is bad behavior. Either step outside to dig around for your deodorant stick or get it out the night before!

Strewing your stuff. Figuring out where to put all your things in a hostel dorm ain’t easy, I know. But strewing it around the entire room as if it were your private hotel is not the way to go. Common common courtesy stipulates that you need to use half the space beneath the bottom bed for your rucksack, plus part of your own bed for hanging things. Strew as much stuff as you want on Top of your own bed, but keep it to that.

Turning the lights on. I’m not sure when exactly the lights go off in most hostels, since most hostels don’t have specific “lights out” rules. However, the basic idea is – if it’s past 10 pm and you open the door to a dark room and there is someone asleep in your dorm, never turn the lights on! Most hostels now equip each bed with its own reading light. If you must – use that.

Getting jiggy. Do I need to say much more?

Dressing/undressing. Hostels have bathrooms. Use them. If you are a pro at getting dressed or undressed under the covers, then by all means, have at it. But if you cannot pull your pants up or de-bra yourself without flashing everybody, please get naked in the privacy of a bathroom stall.

Hanging your towel on a stranger’s bed. A lot of backpackers hang their towels to dry at the end of the bed, and that’s fine, so long as it’s your bed. Don’t assume that, just because the people in the next bunk over haven’t used the space at the end of their beds for drying, that it’s fair game. It all comes down to keeping your stuff to your own space.

Being a bad drunk. Yep, I’ve “slept” through a drunken crazed lunatic blubbering and vomiting all night in the room. Not an experience I care to re-live and not 1 that you need to re-enact. Simple rule: don’t get so drunk that you’re going to get unwell, and if you do have to get sick, get to the toilets 1st, please!

Moving other people’s stuff. This one would seem quite clear, but you’d be surprised how many times I’ve come back to my bed, only to find a shirt moved or a pair of shoes shoved under the bed. Luckily, a lot of hostels are starting to install lockers in each room, so you have a place to stow your stuff. But if you don’t check in to a place that has them, do not touch other people’s things, even if they’ve already violated one of the rules above. Wait ’till they come in and ask them to move their stuff.

Stealing. Do I need to explain any further? Don’t be a jerk.

Having stinky shoes. Okay, I realize that some individuals have a foot condition that they can’t control, and I am not trying to hound on you for your physical problems. But it does not take much effort to be aware of your smelly foot problem and consider leaving your stinky shoes outside the door of the dorm room, rather than letting them reek up the air inside where everyone is resting.

Snoring. This is another ailment that, for many people, can’t be helped. And gentle snoring is something that many people in a hostel dorm can ignore, but if you are a 1 of those goose honkers (and you know who you are), really?consider getting a private room – for everyone else’s sake. ‘Cause that’s just not fair.

Half the enjoyment of planning for a trip is getting to select where you get to go. Every time I recieve one of my free travel guides, I like flipping throughout the various pages to determine what locations jump out at me. Everyone looks for different things within a destination.

Some people would like to waste their entire time bathing in the sun. Some individuals want to waste their time visiting historical places. While other people would like to devote their time observing the locals. What ever it is you want to do you will want to have an action plan arranged before you decide to even think about packing your luggage.

When planning a family vacation it is recommended to research the location or locations you are thinking about. If you are not certain exactly where you would like to go, search through the free travel guide for a few suggestions. I would suggest picking two to three destinations to choose from.

Once you have chosen a couple of destinations, you will need to make sure you research each destination. You should know the best time of the year to visit there, the weather conditions, etc It is always helpful if you can speak to someone who has been there before. They will be able to make it easier to comprehend the lay of the land before you have made your selection.

Now that you’ve done your research setting up a final selection will become easier. Once your destination is scheduled, you should start planning around it. Determine what clothes you will need. If, you need any specific medicine or shots prior to going. Also, you will need to determine whether or not you will have to exchange foreign currency prior to going.

Don’t over schedule you trip. You will want to maintain an easy schedule. Simply because vacations rarely go as prepared, having a tight schedule could backfire on you. Rather, think about planning to be spontaneous while you’re on holiday.

You’ll be shocked how relaxing staying spontaneous can make your trip. You are able to mark places of interests on your free travel brochure. When you arrive there you can make plans to explore the different locations. I’d additionally include a wish list of extras. Just could you’ve got the additional time, you can add within these places.

Remember, the airlines now have bag weight restrictions. Remember domestics weight restrictions differ from international weight restrictions. Consequently, you will want to travel light. For just about all us ladies out there, you should leave room for shopping. What would a holiday be without having shopping?

Free travel guides can be very beneficial when planning your next vacation. Take the stress out of coordinating your next holiday with free travel brochures. This article points out how stress free a vacation can be when utilizing travel brochures.

Camping is a challenging outdoor, leisure activity loved by old and young. The experience of leaving civilization and enjoying nature, while spending one or many nights out-of-doors, is one you will treasure the rest of your lifetime. Camping is normally done at a camping area in a tent or for the less adventurous, in a cabin. Besides using a tent, campers might use a tarp, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all. In this instance you better have a quality sleeping bag.

Throughout the 20th century camping has come to be well-liked and tent manufacturers have answered the call will quality, simple to set up tents. Any camper that frequents national parks, various other publicly held natural areas, and privately owned campgrounds are safe and sound in a top rated tent. Today’s tents with their assorted dimensions are ideal for an inexpensive form of lodging for people going to large open air occasions such as a music festival.

Treking is a transportable form of tent camping. Backpackers use light-weight back packs and tents that can be carried long distances by walking. They hike across the land, camp in tents at remote areas, and generally select campsites at will if resource protection regulations allow. Back packing equipment normally costs more than that for car camping, but nevertheless much less than a trailer, cabin or motor home, and back packing campsites are typically inexpensive. For many campers a 6 person tent is the best option for comfortable camping.

The equipment employed in camping differs with the specific variety of camping you are engaged in. For instance, in survival camping the gear is frequently made up of smaller items which have the purpose of serving out the camper in giving safety, food and heat. The tools used in survival camping must be light and portable and is confined to only the required items.

Survivalist campers discover the skills needed to survive in any out-door circumstance with a safe sturdy tent or shelter and proper survival gear. The survivalist might have to have skills in obtaining food from the wild, emergency medical remedies, orienteering, and pioneering. Therefore it is necessary that the survivalist have the appropriate camping gear. This ranges from a tent, back pack and sleeping bag to camping stove tops, a sharpened knife and fire starting equipment.

Survival camping requires particular tools that common campers are recommended to have with them in the event something go wrong and they need to survive, maybe even until being rescued. A survival kit in your camping gear is suggested. A good survival kit has essential items but ought to be small and fit on one’s person, like in a back pack. These kits are worthless in these instances if they are not effectively looked after.

A survival kit can certainly include things like a small metallic container to be used to heat water over a fire and that can prove invaluable in many cases. An emergency space blanket is an crucial part of a survival kit. These emergency space blankets are especially designed to take up a small amount of space and are ideal for building emergency shelters, keeping the camper comfortable. Also, because of the metalic color, this blanket is also reflective, which indicates it can be very easily seen from an aircraft or search party.

All campers, and not only the survival camper, need to be prepared by having items such as water-proof matches and a large safety pin or fish hook that can be employed in fishing. Baking soda is good in helping a not properly hydrated camper and at the same time, if it is combined into a paste, it helps hastening the cure of mosquito bites. Rubber gloves, antiseptic wipes, tinfoil, jackknife, or Halzone tablets (which purify water) are other good examples of what you ought to have incorporated in a survival kit. While this would seem to be a lot of items to carry on one person, they are in fact compact, lightweight and certainly useful. A well prepared camper is a safe and happy camper

When planning backpacking or hiking trips we need to understand the various important systems we need in place, for choosing the best backpacking camping gear items needed. Gaining as much knowledge as possible is an important part of planning the backpacking gear and essential items needed.

We make a few priorities before setting out on the trail, that includes choosing a suitable sleep system, cook system, tents for camping, and the important hiking and backpacking essential items. Before setting out we get this right to prevent coming home early of the trail with our tail in between our legs. We want to be heading home to tell the family what a fantastic adventure we just had, with an overwhelming desire to do it again.

Sleep System: A good sleep system will include a sleeping bag, sleeping pad or maybe an air mattress that is lightweight and compact enough to use to minimal space in the backpack. A sleeping pad will provide protection needed between you and the floor, whilst also providing comfort. An air mattress for camping is the most comfortable, although these can be a disaster if they puncture. A foam sleeping pad may provide less comfort but are cheaper to buy and can be lighter than their counterparts. Sleeping bags are given different temperature ratings that come in different shapes and sizes. We have the choice from ultralight and lightweight and the kind of fill required, including the most compact, warmer down sleeping bags.

Backpacking cook system: The best backpacking stove, cookware and camping food we plan to eat will need to meet the needs for what we wish to pack, and the weight we are willing to carry whilst being efficient. There is a wide range of stoves available that include home made backpack stoves for the gramme counters to the Jetboil cooking system for those that want a rapid boil within 2 minutes. The conditions the camping stove will used in and the fuels suitable will determine a choice here. Backpacking camp food will need to be basic, and weigh as little as possible with the ability to stay fresh. Many will go with a basic food kit and use dried food or oatmeal to get the much needed energy restoration.

Backpacking tent: Of course a camping tent choice for backpacking and hiking should not be overlooked. This is the most important piece of gear we will be taking on the trail. A minimalist may just just a basic put together tarp shelter or bivy shelter. Others, that want more comfort and room will want a quality tent that may have a vestibule to store hiking boots or wet gear. The more money we spend here, the better the quality of tent we will get, although the midrange price tags can get a great tent, at about $200 to $300.

Essential items: The items above are what I would consider essential, although there are many choices and ways of developing our own system to suit our needs. For essential items for backpacking we would suggest making a list that will include a first aid kit, fire-lighter, map, compass, water filter or possibly a GPS for hiking. Making a list will prevent leaving essential items from our of the backpacking camping gear, we plan to take.

Conclusion: The gear we decide to bring on the camp trip will depend on the weather conditions and climate we will face, our money allowance, and weight we are willing to carry about. Investing in the best backpacking equipment cash can buy is highly advisable, but research is the key.

As exceptionally tinted leaves bedazzle the fall scenery, walkers and hunters across the nation will check out mountain tops, forest and fields, but several, regrettably, are poorly trained for the beating their feet will take. Hunters and walkers will frequently navigate the most rugged terrain.

Hikers and hunters who love the outdoors don’t understand how challenging it can be to stand up to continual, brisk walking on unsteady landscape. Walking up and down sloping hillsides and wandering through muddy, slick fields and wooded areas can put tension on the muscles and tendons inside feet and ankles, especially if you have not conditioned decently just before starting the trail.

The best equipment for walking up and down in the woods is a high caliber pair of well fabricated hiking boots. This investment in quality boots will prevent sprained ankles or strained Achilles tendons. It is wise for hikers and hunters to make the investment in top-grade hiking boots. Strong, well insulated and moisture-proof boots with steel or graphite shanks provide terrific ankle and foot support that facilitates lessening stress and muscle tiredness to keep down injury risk.

In wet and crisp, cold temperature, getting into suitable socks can help avoid blisters, fungal infections and frostbite. An excellent synthetic sock for the initial layer retains dry feet and lessens rubbing that forms blisters. With the second layer, wool socks offer warmth, catch wetness away from the skin, and help make the hiking boot cozier. Wool enables moisture to evaporate more rapidly than cotton, so fewer blisters grow.

How are you affected if your feet or ankles hurt during a hike or hunt? Pain usually occurs from overuse, being out of shape, and even from just walking. In case you are not used to walking on sloped or uneven ground, your legs and feet will get tired and trigger muscles and tendons to ache. In order to avoid a serious injury, like a severe ankle sprain or an Achilles tendon rupture, rest for awhile if you feel it hurting.

Moderation can be another good technique to follow when first starting out in the woodlands. Compare hiking to skiing in that beginners should accept simpler and easier trails until they become better conditioned plus much more confident. Using common sense in starting easy is likely to make your hunt more comfortable and enjoyable.

Hunting expert and Author Ethan O. Tanner explains the different types of hunting accessories the determining factors in easy hunting tips for your outdoor needs.
